The Meaning Behind the Message
This backpack combines two powerful declarations of faith:
1. Unashamed of the Gospel
Romans 1:16 says, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile."
Unashamed means:
Not embarrassed – You're not hiding your faith
Not apologetic – You don't make excuses for believing in Jesus
Not silent – You boldly declare what you believe
Not compromising – You stand firm even when it's unpopular
2 Timothy 1:8 says, "So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God."
Mark 8:38 warns, "If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
Psalm 119:46 declares, "I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame."
The Gospel isn't something to be ashamed of—it's the power of God for salvation. It's the best news the world has ever heard. And you get to carry it boldly.
2. Fisher of Men
Matthew 4:19 records Jesus' call to His first disciples: "'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people.'"
Fisher of Men means:
You're called – Jesus has given you a mission
You're sent – You're not just a believer; you're a witness
You fish for people – You share the Gospel and point people to Jesus
You follow Jesus – Your calling flows from your relationship with Him
Mark 1:17 says, "'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people.'"
Luke 5:10 records Jesus saying to Peter, "'Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.'"
John 21:6 shows Jesus directing the disciples: "He said, 'Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.' When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish."
Just as fishermen cast nets to catch fish, you're called to cast the Gospel net to bring people into the Kingdom of God.
Why the Gospel is Worth Sharing
Romans 1:16 says the Gospel is "the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes."
Power – It's not just information; it's transformation
Of God – It's His power, not yours
Brings salvation – It rescues people from sin and death
To everyone who believes – It's available to all
1 Corinthians 1:18 says, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."
Romans 10:14-15 asks, "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!'"
You're a fisher of men because people need to hear the Gospel. And you're unashamed because the Gospel is worth sharing.
The Great Commission
Matthew 28:18-20 records Jesus' final command to His disciples:
"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"
Go – Don't wait for people to come to you
Make disciples – Not just converts, but followers of Jesus
Of all nations – The Gospel is for everyone
I am with you always – You're not doing this alone
Acts 1:8 promises, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
How to Fish for Men
1. Live it – Let your life reflect Jesus (Matthew 5:16)
2. Love people – Show them the love of Christ (John 13:35)
3. Share it – Tell them about Jesus (1 Peter 3:15)
4. Pray – Ask God to open hearts and doors (Colossians 4:3)
5. Trust God – He's the one who saves; you're just the messenger (1 Corinthians 3:6)
1 Peter 3:15 says, "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
2 Corinthians 5:20 declares, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God."
